Home Schooling
We want to provide our children with the best only, so why go for private or public schools when we know that our child will do better at home-school? Your child has special needs and requires proper attention, which can only be provided by parents or a tutor that is specially hired for home-school.
There can be several reasons why you should choose home schooling. It is possible that your child is unable to give his best at school with other kids or is likely to get involved in bad activities. Many children are gifted and talented and need to spend several hours practicing on that particular area; for them, home-school is the best option. Often families have no better alternatives or resources than home-schooling if living in rural areas or if temporarily living abroad.
Home schooling allows you to choose the curriculum you want for your child, which is not possible if your child is in a public or private school. There can be several methodologies for home schooling. Here are a few that you might want to consider when designing one for your own child.
Charlotte Mason’s approach was to add love for arts and nature to the major subjects taught at school and to increase the use of narration and dictation instead of normal textbooks. In this method, the use of nature rather than text books is emphasized and the child is taught through the “living text books”.
Unit Study approach is the combination of science, geography, history, art, mathematics and several other subjects. A topic is chosen, which can be taught with reference to a combination of subjects (e.g. “Native Americans” can be taught with reference to social studies, history, arts and science). Such an approach is very helpful when teaching multiple aged children at a time.
Unschooling approach is all about interacting with a child and following his own interests. Parents do not direct the child’s education authoritatively, and the children get to decide on their own what they want to learn. This way, a child is free to learn and explore as per his interests. Do not mix it up with ‘deschooling’.
“All in one” curricula are packages that are available in the market covering all the major subjects. They come with all the material and books that will be needed to teach your child almost for the entire year. Such materials recreate a school-like environment and also help your child in an easy transition into school, as they are based on the same subject as are taught at school.
You can also go for an online education program, which includes online lessons, educational games and online tests. They provide you access to specialized teachers and allow you flexibility in scheduling.
You may find yourself switching to another approach as you discover what suits your child best. You can make your own curriculum and can also go for an eclectic (mixed) approach. This research is about different programs that are available in the market and the approaches which are most appropriate to be used as a base in designing your child’s home school curriculum program.
